Continuing on the theme of succession and business planning it is worth focusing on what the ambitions of the next generation might be. Often, this can be really helpful and a powerful way of setting out the agenda for change.

Farming is a long-term business. Decisions about business planning, infrastructure, environmental improvements and farm systems often take many years to deliver results. Recognising the benefits that longer agreements can bring, the Farm Tenancy Forum has published new guidance on long-term Farm Business Tenancies.

Market-based services offer routine health checks and confidential support on sale days and at key events, helping to identify concerns earlier and encourage open conversations around wellbeing.

In 2024, arable farmers across the UK saw a huge increase in ergot in cereal crops and felt the financial impact through grain rejections and the loss of premium prices for their hard-earned harvests. The reasons were hardly a mystery. Difficult drilling conditions in autumn 2023, followed by a warm, wet spring and a cool, rainy summer, created ideal conditions for the fungus to germinate and spread.
