Virtual fencing: not a silver bullet, but a useful tool in the right place

The clearest conclusion from this study is a balanced one. Virtual fencing is not a silver bullet for UK grazing livestock systems. But, particularly where conservation grazing is needed and physical fencing is difficult, it could become a valuable tool for the future of precision grazing.

Virtual fencing is one of the most talked-about innovations in grazing livestock management. The idea is simple: instead of relying only on physical fences, farmers can use digital boundaries to guide where cattle graze. In practice, animals wear collars connected to a mobile app. When they approach a virtual boundary, they receive an audio warning and, if they continue in the direction of the boundary, a mild electrical cue. Over time, animals learn to respond to the sound and stay within the selected grazing area.
