Practical Cost Control Series: Bedding Materials

This is part of a series of articles featuring cost focus and control on our clients’ farms. In this article the focus is on bedding materials, and the cost per tonne compared to cell counts and how understanding this might just make a difference.

I recently conducted a survey amongst some of our dairy clients that use cubicles for housing to see what materials they used, the cost per tonne, and how much of their material they use per month. This was to see whether there is a correlation between bedding material and cell count, or cow happiness.

Increased cell counts can often reduce the amount you are paid per litre – and when the milk price is already low another penny less can make a large difference to the bottom line.
