Trusted Advice in Practice: Ethics, Influence & Liability in Agricultural Consultancy

Published on February 18th, 2026

On 18 February 2026, members of the Society of Agriculture gathered for an insightful and thought-provoking session exploring the evolving role of the agricultural consultant as a trusted advisor. The event formed part of our Online CPD Sessions, designed to support members in maintaining the highest professional standards and continuing professional development.

The session examined the ethical responsibilities, professional risks and collaborative relationships that underpin effective agricultural consultancy, offering practical guidance for advisers navigating increasingly complex client situations.

The session opened with a presentation from Rory Hutchings MSAg, who explored ethics, influence and liability in agricultural consultancy, particularly recognising when specialist legal input is required. He highlighted the importance of early engagement with solicitors in matters such as land disputes, succession planning and regulatory issues, noting that timely advice can prevent complications and reduce exposure to risk.
