Society of Agriculture Trustee Andrew Brown JP FPSAg CEnv represented the Society at the Industry Careers Action Plan (ICAP) Steering Group meeting on 7th September, joining discussions on how the sector can work together to improve agricultural careers information and support.
A central theme was the need for a more coordinated approach, bringing careers advice for farming under one umbrella and making it easier for young people, teachers and careers advisers to find clear, relevant information. The meeting heard that Defra recognises a gap in careers provision for agriculture.
Much of the discussion focused on engagement with schools and helping pupils understand the breadth of opportunities across the sector. Improving awareness of agricultural careers means supporting those who advise young people, as well as creating opportunities for students to discover the industry for themselves.
