Present Consultancy Practice
I have been a Partner at Alnwick Farming & Property Consultants since January 2022, providing independent farm
consultancy services to clients across Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, with a particular specialism in livestock
enterprises. My consultancy work supports farmers and rural businesses in navigating regulatory requirements while improving
business performance and environmental outcomes.
My advice is primarily focused on subsidy applications, grant funding, environmental and conservation schemes, and
regulatory compliance. I work closely with clients to ensure accurate and timely scheme applications, provide support through
inspections, and translate evolving agricultural policy and guidance into practical, workable actions at farm level. This includes
helping clients understand scheme obligations and integrate them effectively within their existing farming systems.
Alongside regulatory and scheme advice, I have carried out enterprise appraisals and provided mentoring for individual
enterprises, supporting informed decision-making and business planning. My approach combines detailed technical
knowledge with a clear understanding of the financial and practical implications for individual businesses.
A key strength of my consultancy practice is my extensive hands-on farming experience. I have run my own farm business for
over 30 years, managing three pedigree sheep flocks alongside a commercial flock. This practical background underpins my
advisory work, ensuring that recommendations are realistic, commercially viable, and grounded in the day-to-day realities of
livestock farming.
In addition to my consultancy and farming activities, I am a Trustee, Director, and Past Chairman of Glendale Agricultural
Society, and I currently serve on the Breed Development Committee for the Texel Sheep Society. These roles reflect my
ongoing commitment to the agricultural sector and enable me to contribute to industry development, knowledge exchange, and
best practice within the livestock industry.
I add value by taking a practical, straightforward approach that clients can trust. By combining my technical and regulatory
knowledge with practical experience built up from managing my own farm over many years, I help farmers stay on the right
side of the rules, make the most of available funding, and improve how their businesses perform, while also supporting longterm sustainability on their farms,
