The Role
Tetworth is a family-owned estate situated on the picturesque Cambridgeshire / Bedfordshire borders. Renowned for its commitment to conservation and quality, the estate is managed by a small, friendly team dedicated to enhancing its beauty for the benefit of those who live and work here.
The estate is seeking a practical and motivated Estate & Woodland Operative to assist with the day-to-day management and ongoing development of the estate.
This is a full-time, hands-on role combining general estate duties with primary responsibility for the establishment and maintenance of 65 hectares of newly planted woodland, alongside support of existing woodland areas.
The position would suit someone experienced in land-based work who enjoys a varied workload and takes pride in maintaining high standards.
Woodland Establishment & Management (65ha Newly Planted Woodland)
- Maintenance of newly planted woodland and hedge rows
- Mowing between young trees and rides
- Weed control around new planting (chemical and mechanical)
- Replanting and beating-up where required
- Inspection and maintenance of tree guards and fencing
- Monitoring tree health and establishment progress
- Record keeping in line with woodland grant schemes
- Supporting long-term woodland management objectives
Existing Woodland Support
- Ride management and access maintenance
- Thinning and general woodland operations
- Invasive species control
- Habitat improvement works
General Estate Duties
- Hedgecutting and hedgerow maintenance
- Grass cutting and verge mowing
- Fencing repairs and installation
- Track and drainage maintenance
- Estate presentation and general upkeep
- Assistance with seasonal estate projects
- Support with management of Grassland for hay and equine use
- Maintenance of farm buildings and infrastructure
Machinery & Workshop Responsibilities
- Operation of tractors, flails, mowers and associated equipment
- Routine machinery maintenance and servicing
- Basic mechanical repairs
- Chainsaw work (subject to certification)
- Workshop organisation and tool maintenance
- Ensuring compliance with health & safety standards
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
- Previous experience in estate, agricultural, forestry or land-based work
- Competent tractor and machinery operator
- Practical mechanical and workshop skills
- Experience with hedgecutting and mowing equipment
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Forestry or woodland establishment experience
- PA1/PA6 spraying certificates
- Chainsaw certification
- Fencing experience
- Telehandler or other plant tickets
