Looking beyond the cheese: What we learned from our Global Farm Metric trial

#375 | Source: Sustainable Food Trust | Published on September 9th, 2026

Artisan cheese supplier, Neal’s Yard Dairy and the Sustainable Food Trust, have been working together for a number of years to assess the sustainability of the farming systems of the cheesemakers who supply produce for NYD.

The SFT’s Global Farm Metric (GFM) framework takes a holistic approach to measuring on-farm sustainability, taking into consideration the environmental, economic and social elements of the farm and how these are all interconnected. The Global Farm Metric Cheese Selection is now available to purchase at Neal’s Yard Dairy – this selection celebrates just some of the farmhouse cheesemakers who participated in our GFM farm trial.

When we choose to work with a given cheese at Neal’s Yard Dairy, flavour has always come first, but flavour has never been the only thing that matters. For nearly fifty years we’ve worked closely with independent cheesemakers, many of whom also farm the animals that produce the milk for their cheese. We visit their farms, spend time in their dairies, taste with them, and build relationships that often span decades. Our decisions about the cheeses we represent have always been shaped by a holistic understanding of the businesses behind them.
