Environmental schemes can look fairly straightforward when they are announced. There is an aim, a payment, some guidance and a set of actions.
A few weeks later, though, that same scheme might be open on a laptop at a farm kitchen table, alongside cropping plans, accounts and a weather forecast. The questions are suddenly much more practical. Will this actually fit the farm? Is the payment enough to justify the change? What happens ifthe weather makes an action difficult? And if a farmer commits now, how confident can they be about what the scheme will look like further down the line?
That gap between policy on paper and what actually works on the ground is the part I keep coming back to.
